Cy Twombly, the American painter who died a few days ago. He lived mostly in Italy, in a palazzo built in Rome in the seventeenth century. Twombly, whose real name was Edwin Parker Twombly, Jr., was raised in Virginia, and his manners and bearing were aloof but elegant. Cy Twombly, whose spare childlike scribbles and poetic engagement with antiquity left him stubbornly out of step with the movements of postwar American art even as he became one of the era’s most important painters, died in Rome Tuesday, July 5, 2011. He was 83. -Credited Sources; The NY Times, The New Yorker.
